A bookstore requires meticulous lighting design: the light must be clear and uniform enough to allow comfortable reading of book spines, but soft enough to create a relaxing and inviting atmosphere. In the case of Bertrand in Guimarães, the challenge was heightened by the space's strong and striking architectural identity, characterized by imposing granite stone walls and rustic ceilings with wooden beams. It was imperative to design a solution that respected and enhanced the building's historicity while simultaneously ensuring the high standards of illuminance and visual comfort demanded by modern retail.
To create a perfect symbiosis between the classic and the contemporary, the LEUK team opted for a mixed and segmented lighting strategy: Accent Lighting on Bookshelves: Continuous linear LED profiles were applied along all the shelves. This directed and grazing light ensures excellent vertical illumination over the works, facilitating reading and selection by customers. The light beam also creates a dazzling contrast with the irregular texture of the stone in the background. General Ambient Lighting: In the circulation areas with wooden ceilings, the solution relied on elegant suspended circular luminaires with a minimalist design (clean white lines), which fill the space with a broad, diffuse light. In the smooth false ceiling areas, discreet downlights (recessed spotlights) were integrated, ensuring homogeneity and the absence of unwanted shadows in the checkout and customer service area.
The final result is a cultural space where history and modernity coexist in absolute harmony. The lighting intuitively guides the customer through the store, transforming the visit into an experience of comfort and discovery. The high quality of the LED light ensures that the colors of the covers and the graphic details stand out, while guaranteeing the bookstore high energy efficiency and durability, reducing the operational costs of the space.
